Gardening projects to do in November:

Things to plant: You can still plant spring-flowering bulbs, but do it quickly before heavy rains prevent you from doing so. We have anemones, daffodils, bearded iris, the ever popular crocus, snowdrops, various tulips and more for you to choose from still in stock. Hurry in for best selection. Sow hardy annuals such as candytuft, clarkia, larkspur, and linaria. They'll germinate and flower earlier than the same seeds sown in the spring. Plant garlic. Set out single cloves this month for harvest next summer. Plant blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and grapes now so they'll have all winter to send out roots; some kinds will produce fruit next year.

Things to fertilize: Feed lawns with 1/2 lb. of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Fertilizers high in potassium help build strong roots that allow a lawn to come in strong next spring. This is a great time to overseed lawns and fill in bare spots that have appeared through the summer. A lawn starter or winterizer will help give new grass vigor before cold winter months. An application of lime corrects pH and also will give you a head start on controlling moss next spring.
Miscellaneous: As early in the month as possible, pull up all your remaining tomato plants and hang them upside down, roots and all, in an out-of-the-way spot indoors. They'll continue to ripen at room temperature. Let fuschias in containers dry off, then cut them back and store them in a frost-protected place such as a shed or garage. Water them lightly each month to keep them alive during their dormant period. Drain hoses and irrigation systems, and insulate any exposed outdoor hose bibs.

Employee Birthdays and Anniversaries in November:
Jim Johansen celebrates his birthday on the 19th. Please stop by the store for some birthday cake on this day. Celebrating his fifth anniversary with us on the 1st- our manager, Emery Olson.

Bird Feeding- Be sure to take down your hummingbird feeder(s) if you haven't done so already. Clean and store it(them) for next year. This is a great time to feed a variety of bird seed to birds as they migrate. Many people supplement bird seed mixes with thistle seed or sunflower hearts. Pick locations for setting up bird feeders throughout the yard. Don't be discouraged if the birds don't find your feeder(s) right away. Birds are "hunter-gatherers" and forage for much of their daily nutritional requirements. Birds find feeders by sight while roaming over a wide territory looking for food. It sometimes takes time for them to discover new feeders. Oil (black) sunflower is the most popular seed with most seed-eating birds. Try some.
